BUILDING BRIDGES
Freshmen at Aquinas High School are building bridges to the future in a pre-engineering strand of the Initiative for Math and Science Careers, a three-year program funded by the William E. Simon Foundation. The bridge-building project is directed by Dr. John Cummins and Professor John Wolbeck of Orange Community College. The goal of the project is to have students experience not only the power of applied mathematics but also the intersection of math, physics and engineering. The bridge is a powerful example of how these various disciplines converge in the service of human needs.

The project began with an introduction to some of the factors involved in the construction of bridges: tension, compression, equilibrium, expansion, etc. Then students formed their own engineering companies and set about the tasks of design and construction. The culmination this semester will be a ‘bridge-breaking contest’ to determine and acclaim the strongest bridge.
The final phase of the project in the spring semester will be a class trip to Bear Mountain Bridge to see how its features illustrate the principles learned. Margarita Valencia, Class of 2011, says, "I love this project! Maybe I’ll be working with steel cables instead of popsicle sticks some day!"
STATE OF THE "ART STUDIO"
"I really didn't mind the old art room, as long as I could do art. But looking back, I feel that the room has gone from the stone age to the jet age! It's a great environment to work in. We have more room, and it's easier to express our artwork." Aquinas Art Student
Since the renovation, even old ideas have taken on a new look. It's evident in the students' work, for instance these visual words created by two freshmen.
SCIENCE LABS TRANSFORMED
During the summer of 2004 the chemistry, physics and earth science labs were completely transformed from the inside out. New wiring and plumbing reached deep into walls and floors, and flat panel work stations and beautiful cabinets provided a sleek, new exterior.

ADMISSIONS INFORMATION
7th and 8th grade students and their families interested in Aquinas should contact Ms. Betsy Davila at (718) 367-2113 X137 for an opportunity to meet our students, teachers, administrators, and parents and learn about Aquinas' fine facilities and excellent traditions.
SCHOOL DAY VISITS FOR STUDENTS 
Eighth grade students are invited to participate in the Aquinite for a Day Program. Visitors will attend classes with a freshman and meet other students, teachers and administrators to discuss Aquinas' programs and activities.
School Day Visits are scheduled from October through December. The program is from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and includes a complimentary lunch. Permission from your parent and principal is required. You may arrange an individual visit by contacting Aquinas' Director of Admissions at (718) 367-2113, Ext. 137.
SCHOOL DAY VISITS FOR PARENTSParents of prospective students are also invited to visit Aquinas during the school day. During October and November parents may make an appointment to tour the school on a school day from 8:30-10:00 a.m. with the Director of Admissions. Please arrange your visit at least one day in advance by calling (718) 367-2113, Ext. 137.
TUITION & FEESThe tuition for the 2012-2013 school year is $6,900 per year per student. There is a family rate for more than one student. The general fee is $200 per student for the school year. This includes academic subject fees, religion books (not covered by the New York State Textbook Law), and a student insurance plan.

A breakfast and lunch program is available. All students may enjoy a nutritious breakfast. Some students are eligible for either free or reduced-price lunches if the family gross income meets the specific criteria outlined by the New York City Department of Education in accordance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's annual guidelines.
TEXTBOOKSAll hardcover textbooks are loaned to the students for the school year. Some workbooks and paperback books are made available to the students through the New York State Textbook Law. Other necessary supplies must be purchased by students through the supply envelope system (approximate cost $400).
APPLICATION/PLACEMENT/ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPEighth grade students wishing to attend Aquinas High School are expected to take the TACHS (Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools). The test is administered in November for eighth grade students applying for admission to the September freshman class. Applications for TACHS are available in Catholic elementary schools and high schools or by contacting the Office of the Superintendent of Schools, Archdiocese of New York, (212)371-1000. Completed applications must be mailed as directed in the application. The Aquinas school code is 213.
Full/partial Academic Scholarships to Aquinas are awarded to academically gifted students based on achievement on TACHS. In addition, TACHS scores and 9th Grade Applicant records serve as a guide for the placement of freshmen in classes.
Letters of acceptance are mailed in January. Registration Day is on March 7, 2012.
