Aquinas Student Wins New York Times Scholarship
NEW YORK--March 12, 2007--The New York
Times College Scholarship Program announced today the 20 winners of this
year's awards, bringing the total number of students in the program to
180. Bianca Farrell,
class of 2007 of Aquinas High School,
is one of them!
Now in its ninth year, the Scholarship
Program will provide each of this year's winners with up to $7,500 a year
for four years of college and will work with the students' colleges to
shape their financial packages.
As in previous years, the winners are New
York City high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic
achievement, a commitment to learning even in the face of financial and
personal obstacles and community service. The winners were chosen from
about 1,300 applicants.
"The high school seniors in our 2007
class are among the best and the brightest in New York City," said Soma
Golden Behr, director of the program. "These students are determined to
reach their goals in the face of adversity and we are delighted to help
them on their journey."
In addition to financial aid, the
Scholarship Program provides the students with summer jobs and mentors
from The Times, introduces students to cultural and civic activities in
New York City, and helps winners from previous years find internships at
other companies and organizations in the city.
The New York Times College Scholarship Program is supported in part
by The New York Times Company Foundation. Other funding is made possible
from an endowment started with a grant from the Starr Foundation and
from contributions by individual Times readers.
