2009 - 2010 Annual Fund

Your Gift Makes a World of Difference!

Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends,

At the beginning of the 2009-10 school year, our administration, faculty, and staff are very conscious of the tremendous difference you make in our plans to carry out the mission of Aquinas High School, day by day.

Your generous gifts sustain the vision of Aquinas' founders, the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill. Their continuing presence and magnanimous support, along with the contribution of the Archdiocese of New York through the Inner City Scholarship Fund, are key factors in our annual campaign.

This campaign is the means of keeping Aquinas equipped for excellence, while maintaining tuition within reach of the families we serve. Parents of our students, like people everywhere, have felt the effects of the economic downturn. Yet, their children's education remains a priority. Every dollar raised will be spent this school year to provide the students with the very best in Catholic education. Please be generous, within your means.

Thank you for your vital participation in the mission of Aquinas. Your intentions hold a special place in the students' petitions at the Eucharistic Liturgy of the Holy Spirit for the beginning of this academic year. May God's goodness shine in your peace and happiness, just as your goodness shines in the continuing progress of Aquinas.

Aquinas High School is committed to providing the best in Catholic secondary education for the young women of New York City today.

We ask that you recommit yourselves to the mission and beliefs of Aquinas. By your gift, please help us to achieve our goal of $375,000 for this year. The Annual Fund '09 -'10 will provide: tuition support for needy students, ongoing refurbishment of the building, upgrading of the lighting system for energy conservation, and new opportunities for student Christian life and service.

Thank you for your prayers and your generous support. Your gift makes a world of difference at Aquinas.

Sincerely,

Sr. Margaret Ryan, OP, President  and Sr. Catherine Rose Quigley, OP, Principal

The Annual Campaign ends on June 30. If you have not already done so, please send a gift within your means to share in the mission of Aquinas today. Don't forget an online gift is possible:  see the top of this page for details.

Support-an-Aquinas-Student Program

Aquinas High school is dedicated to meeting the needs of inner city students.  A Catholic high school in the South Bronx, Aquinas serves young women who are 65% Latino, 32% African American, and 3% Asian and other.  Over 50% of Aquinas’ 704 students come from families with poverty level incomes.

Aquinas students are beating overwhelming odds.  Over 95% of our grad-uates go on to higher education.  The Class of 2008 earned in excess of fifteen and a half million dollars in college scholarships and grants.  There are many promising young women who want to come to Aquinas but their families cannot afford the tuition.  The following profiles are compiled from recent requests for financial aid received by Sr. Margaret Ryan, President of Aquinas.

Lourdes has had a wonderful Freshman year at Aquinas.  Her mother, a single parent who speaks only Spanish, was able to manage the tuition payments with help from an uncle who gave her $150 per month.  Now her uncle has been laid off from work.   Her mother cannot pay the tuition without substantial assistance.  Lourdes' hopes for the future are based in Aquinas, the school that she has come to love as family.

Vanessa is one of three sisters being raised by their grandmother.  Their mother died of a heroin overdose when they were pre-school age.  The grandmother works for low wages and has devoted the past 12 years to the care of these girls.  Their neighborhood is infested with drugs and violence.  Aquinas would provide a wholesome and hopeful atmosphere for Vanessa now, and eventually for all three sisters.

Kym’s family left Viet Nam at great risk. She has three brothers in parochial school.  Her father's income is barely sufficient to meet the reduced tuition payments required by a poor parish in the South Bronx.  High school tuition is completely beyond their means.  Kym is an excellent student.  An Aquinas education would probably bring her a college scholarship.

The Support-an-Aquinas-Student Program enables you to help a student such as those described above.  You will know your sponsored student by name.  Donors and recipients will work together and grow together.

As Cathleen Hackett Horne ’53, one of the first SAS sponsors says: “There is a compelling need to make the excellent educational opportunities of Aquinas available to young women of the South Bronx today.  I feel privileged to play a part in doing so.”

Please mail your check (Range: $500.00 to $6,000.00) to the Aquinas Development Office as a gift which will make a real difference in one person’s life.  You will then be provided with the name and appropriate information about your student, and the recipient will be given the name of her sponsor.

WAYS TO HELP

Just as alumnae are proud of their Alma Mater, Aquinas is proud of the accomplishments of its alumnae throughout and beyond the United States. The generosity of alumnae is a major support of Aquinas' mission to the young women of New York City today.

SOPHOMORE FUTURE OPTIONS FORUM

Career Forum: The Sophomore Class participates in the Future Options Forum each year. Students have the opportunity to meet with panelists and receive information and suggestions in career areas of their choice. Most of the panelists are alumnae, and the forum and luncheon which follows provide a gathering of Aquinas women making a difference in many paths of life. The next Future Option Forum will be held on March 25, 2009. If you would like to share your career experience and offer suggestions to Aquinas 10th graders, please call the school Development Office. Panelists are assured of a great welcome from an enthusiastic group of young women.

MAREN GRANT ACHIEVES VITAL GOAL: TECHNOLOGY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

When the Thomas H. Maren Foundation funded the Integration of Technology Program at Aquinas High School in April, 2003, its goal was to assure that every student would further her technology skills in every discipline. The fruits of the grant are evident across the curriculum. A glimpse of just a few student projects gives an inkling of the impact of this initiative...

SCIENCE LABS TRANSFORMED BY RECORD-MAKING KNUEVEN GRANT

(l. to r.) Sr. Catherine Rose Quigley, Sr. Margaret Ryan, Georgia & Gerald Knueven, and Sr. Maryann Summa, President of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill

Aquinas High School celebrated the dedication of its 21st Century Science Center on October 20, 2004. All of the Aquinas school community joined in celebrating a dream-come-true through the generosity of the Knueven Family Foundation. This past summer the chemistry, physics and earth science labs were completely transformed from the inside out. New wiring and plumbing reached deep into walls and floors, and flat panel work stations and beautiful cabinets provided a sleek, new exterior. While the physical plant was being renewed, so were the science teachers.

AQUINITES AROUND THE WORLD

Have you ever wondered what life was like outside the United States? Have you ever wanted to learn another language while being immersed in a culture completely different from your own? Well, you will be amazed to know that several students here at Aquinas have accomplished all those things and more by participating in Summer Study Abroad Programs.
